Can you spot social pressure? Try 5 free scenarios
Five short, fictional situations. Choose what you think is the most evidence-based response, then open the answer to see why. This mini challenge is free and does not collect your answers.
Scenario 1: Guilt and loyalty
A colleague says: “If you were a team player, you would work unpaid tonight.” What matters most?
- Their confidence
- The link between loyalty and compliance
- How busy the office is
Reveal the explanation
Best response: B — The link between loyalty and compliance.
The request is paired with a judgement of loyalty. A constructive reply can ask about the work while keeping the right to decline unpaid hours.
Scenario 2: Urgent offers
An online store announces: “Only 5 minutes left!” What is the best next step?
- Buy immediately
- Assume it must be a scam
- Verify the deadline and compare alternatives
Reveal the explanation
Best response: C — Verify the deadline and compare alternatives.
Some deadlines are genuine. Checking the terms and other options helps you decide without artificial urgency.
Scenario 3: Viral claims
A post has been shared 60,000 times. What does that tell you?
- It reached many people
- The claim is true
- Independent researchers agree
Reveal the explanation
Best response: A — It reached many people.
Sharing measures reach, not accuracy. Look for primary sources and independently checkable evidence.
Scenario 4: Reading silence
After an argument, someone stays quiet. What is the fairest interpretation?
- They must be punishing you
- Several explanations are possible
- Silence proves dishonesty
Reveal the explanation
Best response: B — Several explanations are possible.
Silence may reflect anger, overwhelm, thinking time or other circumstances. Ask a neutral question instead of assuming motive.
Scenario 5: Free trials
An online trial is “free” but asks for a bank card. Which detail matters?
- The colour of the sign-up button
- How many followers the brand has
- Renewal charges and cancellation rules
Reveal the explanation
Best response: C — Renewal charges and cancellation rules.
A trial may renew into a paid plan. Checking the date, price and cancellation method protects informed choice.
What do the five questions have in common?
Each asks you to slow down, separate a claim from its evidence and check whether you have a real choice. No single answer measures personality or intelligence. The point is to practise noticing details before reaching a conclusion.
